Human Rights Action Group convened the Human Rights Coalition (HRC), a coalition of diaspora community organizations– including Falun Gong Human Rights Group, Canada-Hong Kong Link, Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project, Democratic Spaces, Tamil Rights Group, Hidmonna-Eritrean Canadian Human Rights Group of Manitoba, Security and Justice for Tigrayans Canada, and the Alliance of Genocide Victim Communities– to participate in the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions (“the Commission”).

On February 27, 2025, following the release of the Commission’s final report, the HRC co-hosted a parliamentary press conference with the Canadian Coalition for a Foreign Influence Transparency Registry (FITR).

Representing the HRC, Human Rights Action Group legal researcher Isabelle Terranova summarized the HRC’s recommendations for the Canadian Government. Namely, the HRC urgently requested that the Canadian Government 1) pursue new avenues to protect and provide support, including financial, physical, and psychological support, to victims of transnational repression in Canada; 2) consistently leverage existing laws and policies, including immigration and sanctions laws; and 3) revoke counterproductive laws and policies, including those furthering cooperation with authoritarian regimes in criminal matters.

Also speaking on behalf of the HRC, founding member of the Alliance of Genocide Victim Communities Joanne Hodges highlighted the consequences of misinformation and disinformation for Canadian diaspora communities. She further remarked that any steps Canada takes to address transnational repression must be transparent and inclusive, ensuring that no impacted communities are excluded from the conversation.
