Tibetans
CTC is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting human rights and democratic freedoms for the Tibetan people. Established in 1987, CTC has been at the forefront of Tibet advocacy in Canada, working to raise awareness about the Chinese government’s repressive policies in Tibet and to strengthen Canada’s support for the rights of Tibetans both inside Tibet and in exile.
Since the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1950, Tibetans have faced severe human rights abuses, including restrictions on religious freedom, the forced relocation of nomads, the suppression of the Tibetan language and culture, and arbitrary arrests of peaceful protesters. In recent years, the Chinese government has intensified its campaign to erase Tibetan identity through coercive residential boarding schools and the widespread surveillance of Tibetan communities. Over 150 Tibetans have self-immolated in protest against Chinese rule since 2009.
The Chinese government’s repression of Tibetans extends beyond Tibet’s borders. The Chinese government continues to monitor, intimidate, and harass members of the Tibetan diaspora, including in Canada, as part of its broader campaign of transnational repression. Chinese state actors have used visa blackmail, infiltrated community associations, and engaged in disinformation campaigns to silence Tibetans abroad and undermine Tibetan advocacy efforts.
Human Rights Action Group is working with CTC to combat these abuses and to safeguard Tibetans, as well as Canada’s democratic institutions, from this foreign interference.
