On November 29, 2025, HRAG co-founder and chair David Matas appeared on the 7NEWS’ The Issue podcast hosted by National Security Editor Tim Lester to discuss forced organ harvesting in China and Australia’s response.

Matas outlined how he and David Kilgour researched and uncovered the scale of the Chinese government’s perpetration of forced organ harvesting against prisoners of conscience, including primarily Falun Gong practitioners. He discussed how the problem of forced organ harvesting has changed over the years, noting that, in fact, the problem may be worse now given the expansion of the practice to target a large number of Uyghurs in addition to Falun Gong practitioners.

In relation to Australia’s particular response to China’s crimes of forced organ harvesting, Matas summarized that “on balance, regrettably, Australia is a disappointment. It’s … almost 20 years and they’ve done nothing, pretty much. They really should do something.” As to what this something should be, he recommended introducing legislation into Parliament prohibiting extraterritorial complicity in organ transplant abuse. He noted that such action should be simple and is not a matter of reinventing the wheel, citing to similar legislation in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel, and Taiwan.
