Northern Justice Watch (NJW) organized a “Combatting Hate Speech” panel at the University of Toronto on August 27, 2023. The panel attracted significant interest from Turkish community members. HRAG co-founders Sarah Teich and David Matas were among the panelists.
Teich and Matas discussed how Simon Wiesenthal transformed the prosecution of Nazis after the Second World War. Teich emphasized Wiesenthal’s perseverance regarding the collection and documentation of evidence, and his contributions to the Jewish community. She also highlighted various legal avenues available to victims of diaspora communities subjected to crimes against humanity. Matas discussed a variety of legal approaches to combatting hate speech, and described sixteen specific legal mechanisms that may be available, including those in relation to web hosts and social media platforms.
The full transcript of Sarah’s and David’s remarks are available on NJW’s website.
