The Globe and Mail wrote about Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project (URAP) and Human Rights Action Group (HRAG)’s targeted sanctions submission concerning eight Chinese companies and sixteen individuals with responsibility for gross violations of human rights in the seafood industry.

This request for targeted sanctions was submitted to Global Affairs Canada on September 3, 2024, and was largely based on last year’s findings from the Outlaw Ocean Project revealing systemic abuses on board Chinese fishing vessels. Speaking to The Globe and Mail, Mehmet Tohti, Executive Director of URAP, and Sarah Teich stated that products from these entities should be prevented from entering the Canadian market.
